According to foreign media reports, on February 22 local time, a Panamanian bulk carrier "Federal Iris" round of explosions about 120 miles west of the Columbia River inlet.
It is reported that the accident ship "Federal Iris" round owned by Fednav, was built in 2016. At the time of the accident, the ship was departing from Changzhou to Longview, Washington. Following the accident, the United States Coast Guard conducted an emergency rescue operation and contacted the crew to tow the ship to the shore via an emergency tug. The towing operation is expected to take 48 hours to arrive in Seattle.
According to the United States Coast Guard, 21 crew members were absent from the ship, but damage caused by the explosion caused the main propulsion system to fail. Prior to the blast, the vessel encountered some operational difficulties due to inoperability problems with some propulsion and ballast water treatment systems.
